Kerala WhatsApp Video-Call Deepfake Scam (Kozhikode)

P S Radhakrishnan, a former private-sector employee from Kozhikode, received a WhatsApp video call in July 2023 from a stranger using AI-driven face and voice impersonation to appear as a former colleague from Andhra Pradesh. The caller invoked names of mutual former colleagues and asked for INR 40,000 for an emergency hospitalisation, which Radhakrishnan transferred online.

Impact

When the caller requested an additional INR 35,000, Radhakrishnan grew suspicious and confirmed the original colleague had not contacted him. This is documented as Kerala's first publicly reported deepfake video-call fraud and triggered a state-wide cyber-police advisory.

Outcome

Kerala Police Cyber Cell traced the funds to a private bank in Maharashtra; the receiving account was frozen and a portion of the money recovered. The Indian Cybersquad documented the case as a benchmark example of AI-enabled vishing in India.

AI-Generated Disinformation in India's 2024 Lok Sabha Election
India's 2024 general election saw the most extensive deployment of generative-AI in any democratic election to date. More than 50 million AI-generated voice-clone calls were made in the two months before polling. Deepfake videos and audio impersonating Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh circulated widely. A particularly damaging doctored clip of Amit Shah appearing to announce the abolition of caste-based reservations led to police FIRs.
