Uber Eats Facial Recognition Discrimination against Pa Edrissa Manjang

Manjang, a Black Uber Eats courier, was repeatedly blocked from working by the Real-Time ID Check system, which failed to match his selfies to his stored photo despite his unchanged appearance. Final failed check in 2021 triggered automatic deregistration. Worker Info Exchange obtained his submitted selfies via GDPR Subject Access Request and proved they were all clearly of him.

Impact

Microsoft Face API has documented higher error rates for darker-skinned faces. Funded by UK EHRC and App Drivers and Couriers Union.

Outcome

Uber settled March 2024 for undisclosed sum; Manjang reinstated. Uber did not publicly accept fault. First UK settlement of its kind.

AI Voice-Clone Cartel Virtual Kidnapping of Las Vegas Mother
In April 2026, a Las Vegas mother received what she believed was a kidnapping call from her daughter, sobbing on the line. A male caller then claimed cartel custody and demanded $15,000. The 'daughter's voice' was an AI clone built from publicly available social-media audio. The caller kept the mother on the phone for nearly six hours while she drove between banks, grocery stores, and a Walmart, wiring money to Toluca, Mexico.

AI-Generated Disinformation in India's 2024 Lok Sabha Election
India's 2024 general election saw the most extensive deployment of generative-AI in any democratic election to date. More than 50 million AI-generated voice-clone calls were made in the two months before polling. Deepfake videos and audio impersonating Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh circulated widely. A particularly damaging doctored clip of Amit Shah appearing to announce the abolition of caste-based reservations led to police FIRs.

AI 'Resurrects' Suharto for Indonesia 2024 Election Campaign
Less than two weeks before Indonesia's 14 February 2024 presidential election, an AI-generated deepfake video of long-deceased dictator Suharto, who died in 2008, circulated on X. The synthetic Suharto told viewers, 'I am President Suharto, the second president of Indonesia, inviting you to elect representatives of the people from Golkar.' The Golkar Party, which backed eventual winner Prabowo Subianto (Suharto's former son-in-law), distributed the video as part of its official campaign.
